The "United" bid, that will see 60 of the tournament's games held in the US, with Canada and Mexico getting 10 each, beat out the underdog campaign of Morocco to bring soccer's biggest show back to American soil. Competing against South Korea, Japan, Australia and Qatar, the US seemed like the obvious choice given its existing stadiums and geo-political standing.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup finals will take place in Qatar, while the 2026 finals will be the first to have 48 teams in attendance.

US President Donald Trump tweeted: "The US, together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup". However, the New York Times has reported that United bid officials have letters from the USA president saying all teams that qualify - and their fans - will be able to enter the country.

Vancouver had an opportunity to join Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton as a potential host, but the united North American bid committee was forced to move forward without the West Coast city in March after failing to reach a deal over the cost of the tournament.

Indeed, Trump's behind-the-scenes actions may even have helped sway some key votes.

Behind the scenes though, Trump played diplomat. Of those letters, Sports Illustrated's Brian Strauss writes: "It's uncertain how much any of that swayed the vote, but it was among the topics of conversation and contention leading into Wednesday's congress".

A total of 200 voters from Fifa's member associations had to decide between Morocco or North America as host of the 2026 World Cup.

Highlights of the bid included promising $11 billion in profit on more than $14 billion in revenue and an already strong infrastructure for hosting.

The U.S. last hosted the World Cup in 1994, an event that eventually gave rise to Major League Soccer, now in its 23rd season.

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation". "New Jersey has hosted World Cup matches before and we are more than ready to do so again", Murphy said in a statement Wednesday.

Spain abstained, its attention diverted by news that national team manager Julen Lopetegui was headed to Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid after the tournament.

The United bid plans to use 16 stadiums from a list of 23 - 17 of which are deemed just fine the way they are, with six needing renovation. Three cities each in Canada and Mexico will also host games.

The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup will be hosted by Qatar.

Putin called Infantino a, "fighter" in hard times for FIFA and praised his commitment in fighting politics in football and corruption as well.

The 80 matches in the 2026 tournament, involving an expanded roster of 48 teams, will be held in stadiums scattered throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
