Trump’s former personal lawyer says he’ll put family first

The real audience of one lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "At that point, the legal interests of the president of the United States and his longtime personal attorney could quickly become adversarial".

Friends of Cohen's told CNN last month that he has signaled that he is "willing to give" investigators information on the President if that's what they are looking for.

"It's a barely coded message that he is ready to cooperate", said Kendall Coffey, a former US attorney in Miami.

"I put family and country first", he added in the first in-depth interview since the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his Rockefeller Center office and Park Avenue hotel room in April, seizing business records and materials related to a hush payment he made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

In recent months, as investigators zeroed in on Cohen's representation of Trump and raided his NY office and the hotel where he has been staying, Trump weighed in with comments castigating the raid and saying he did not think Cohen would turn against him. Cohen did not just negotiate the $130,000 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with the president.

Stephanopoulos said he asked Cohen if he had any regrets about how he has handled any of the matters under investigation. Cohen responded, "I want to answer. One day I will answer", he told Stephanopoulos. But in the ABC News interview, he said he couldn't comment on advice of his lawyer.

It's not clear what evidence if any Cohen may have to offer the government about others including Trump. Trump has insisted he was not aware of the meeting. Mueller might expect Cohen to be able to testify, for example, about whether anyone in the Trump campaign ever encouraged foreign nationals linked to Russian hackers to publicize emails stolen from Hillary Clinton - conduct that could be criminal.

Cohen said he did the interview as a first step toward "resolution" of his involvement with Trump.

Last fall in an interview with Vanity Fair, he said: "I'm the guy who stops the leaks. I respect the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an institution, as well as their agents", Cohen told me. Besides Cohen's office, agents also searched a hotel room at the Loews Regency where he's been staying while his home is under renovation. Nonetheless, the agents were respectful, courteous and professional. "I thanked them for their service and as they left, we shook hands".

"I don't like the term 'witch hunt, '" Cohen was quoted as saying.

The joint defense agreement that Cohen had shared with Trump, allowing their lawyers to share information with each other, will end once Petrillo is fully on board, ABC News reports.

In Michael Cohen's first interview since federal agents raided his home and hotel room as part of a probe into his personal business dealings, he was asked what he would do if prosecutors forced him to choose between protecting the president and protecting his family.

- Debra Messing (@DebraMessing)THANK YOU @GStephanopoulos for your incredible reporting and the #BREAKINGNEWS that Michael Cohen is no longer going to "take a bullet" for Trump, that his family and his *country /blockquote *whoopsie.

The consensus seems to be that Cohen is in fact planning to cooperate with the NY prosecutors investigating his business dealings, or that he is angling for a presidential pardon by signaling to his former boss that his allegiance is conditional. "When people that are targets of investigations are talking about doing what's best for their family, it's inevitably a code for cooperating and getting the best deal they can from prosecutors".

In the interview this weekend, Cohen told Stephanopoulos that he would rely on Petrillo's legal advice to help him decide how to proceed in his dealings with the government.

It all goes back to Trump.
