EPA head Scott Pruitt is gone, but his mission continues

There is little indication that interim replacement Andrew Wheeler, Pruitt's deputy at the EPA and a former coal-industry lobbyist, will take any different approach to policy matters - Trump said as much in another tweet.

Pruitt was reportedly taken aback by the request.

Soon after, Trump announced in a two-part tweet that he had accepted Pruitt's resignation. Chmielewski also leveled new claims against the administrator, including "improper retaliation against EPA staff". But Pruitt had also been dogged for months by scandals that spawned more than a dozen federal and congressional investigations.

Among other complaints, Pruitt is alleged to have pushed his aides to secure a $200,000 political-fundraising job for his wife; required staffers to perform non-official work; and insisted on traveling first-class or via private jet despite aides' objections.

She then began to detail some of her issues with the EPA.

In his resignation letter, posted by Fox News, the former Oklahoma attorney general thanked President Trump for his courage and commitment to "historical regulatory reform".

"The same energy and passion that helped boot Scott Pruitt will be focused on ensuring the next EPA administrator works for the public, not corporate polluters".

Even before Pruitt's resignation letter became public, critics of the Trump administration were claiming credit for his departure and pointing to calls by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-California) to "get a crowd together, confront Trump cabinet members" in public spaces. The New York Times reported that he delayed or blocked more than 30 environmental rules within his first four months of taking office, including the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan and an Obama-era rule curbing pollution in waterways.

Pruitt, a close ally of the fossil fuel industry, also was known for questioning the human role in global climate change.

Pruitt was nominated by Trump and served as EPA administrator from February 17, 2017, to July 6, 2018.

"The electorate in Oklahoma has changed a lot lately", said Bennett.

While working as a lobbyist, Wheeler worked, along with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, to open part of Utah's Bears Ears National Monument for uranium mining. Ana Unruh Cohen, managing director for government affairs at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told Coral Davenport, "Like Pruitt, this veteran coal lobby lobbyist has shown only disdain for the EPA's vital mission to protect Americans' health and our environment".

EPA deputy Andrew Wheeler would "assume duties as the acting Administrator of the EPA". The Government Accountability Office found that he violated spending laws by installing a $43,000 soundproof phone booth in his office - one of the more than half-dozen federal inquiries launched into his management and expenditures.

As the CV may suggest, Wheeler is no stranger to the intricacies of environmental policy or the kinds of tasks that await him at the top of the EPA.

"Under my ethics agreement with the Agency, I will have no involvement with EFI for two years", he said in the statement offered by the agency. He loves animals. He loves clean air. Ethics accusations against Pruitt also involved him giving his wife a job at the Republican Attorneys General Association with a salary of Dollars 200,000.

As recently as June 8, Trump praised Pruitt, telling reporters on the South Lawn of the White House that the EPA administrator was "doing a great job within the walls of the EPA", and that "we're setting records".
