The biggest crowds, however, will probably be with Woods, who was due to tee off at 3.21pm local time alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Scotland's top-ranked golfer, Russell Knox.

That necessary creativity and course unpredictability both play into Woods' hands against younger, sharper players.

The Open will be Woods' 12th tournament of the year in his comeback from a spinal fusion 15 months ago, and his return has been a work in progress, sometimes two steps forward and one step back.

"At Carnoustie there are not many opportunities to hit the driver because the ball is going to roll 80 yards, so it's hard to keep the ball in play".

"Even if I get a little bit older, I can still chase some wood or long club down there and hit the ball the same distance".

Americans have won the last five majors and will take some beating this week, with reigning champion Jordan Spieth, world number one Dustin Johnson, and Woods all hoping to be in contention.

Tiger Woods says the British Open represents his best chance of winning another major championship, and with some "cleaner golf" this might be the week he breaks his decade-plus major drought.

The Open champion of 2000, 2005 and 2006 has also had nine top-10 finishes in his 19 starts in the tournament.

"We're not going to get the most ideal bounces". A certain shot you think is a wonderful shot down the middle of the fairway could bounce some weird way.

"I enjoy this type of golf because it is creative", he said. "Because Tiger is responsible for these guys playing for a million every week". That's just part of it and the fun challenge of it.

"That combination with an Open Championship, the way it needs to be played, I think, is a really good spot for me to kickback into shape".
