Emanuel fired McCarthy back in 2015 after a backlash over his handling of the shooting death of black teen Laquan McDonald, who was shot more than a dozen times by a white police officer.

"We continue to see the devastating effects illegal guns have in some of our communities", stated Fred Waller, Chief of Patrol for the Chicago Police Department.

"We know that some of these incidents were targeted and are related to gang conflicts in those areas", he added.

At a news conference, Mr Johnson said that police had "really good leads on quite a few" of the suspected shooters, but no arrests have been made. One paramedic described Saturday evening into Sunday morning as "a war zone". According to reports, a 50-year-old male was killed whilst a 55-year-old woman was wounded in the shooting.

Nevertheless, Chicago´s official murder count, at more than 320 killings so far this year, was the highest in the country and far eclipsed those of America´s two largest cities - NY and Los Angeles.

"All of us know that this is not Chicago - what we saw - therefore all of us who love this city and call it home have a responsibility to heal our neighborhoods", he said.

Most of the shootings happened on Sunday with 30 people shot. Two gunmen exited a vehicle and shot four people at a party then fled the scene.

Chicago has done much to combat its high shooting and murder rates in recent years, with Mr Waller claiming shootings are down 30% from 2017, and murders are down 25%. He was on the sidewalk with five other people, including a 14-year-old boy, when two men came up and started shooting, police said.

President Donald Trump's lawyer, Rudi Giuliani, who falsely claimed 63 people were murdered in the city over the weekend, laid the blame for the violence on Chicago's longtime "Democratic rule" in a series of tweets on Sunday and Monday.

Police said a group of people, three teens and five adults, were standing in a courtyard in the 1300-block of West 76th Street at about 12:40 a.m. when several people approached on foot and opened fire at the group.

In vowing to rehire as many as 400 retired police detectives if he is elected, Vallas also criticized the Emanuel administration for having "one of the worst clearance rates for homicides and other violent crimes among America's major cities".

Waller said the city has taken more than 5,500 guns off the streets this year. "But I promise you we won't be defeated.by a small element committing these reckless acts".
