West Bromwich Albion striker Salómon Rondón has been loaned to Newcastle United

He only scored six league goals last season - one less than Rondon - and will now look to help Darren Moore's West Brom back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, who has been vocal about the club's need to add fresh faces in the transfer window, was delighted by the capture of Rondon.

As part of the deal the Magpies have sent Dwight Gayle in the opposite direction, with the striker joining the Baggies on a similar deal.

"When we were looking for options up front, we knew how important experience would be".

"It's one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and I knew about the interest of the gaffer, so I'm happy to be here".

"It's an honour to be here and I'm excited to get started with my team mates", Rondon told the club's official website.

Former Premier League midfielder David Thompson has mocked Newcastle United's signing of Salomon Rondon from West Brom.

Newcastle signed Japan striker Yoshinori Muto on Thursday, following the arrival of Switzerland defender Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna last week.

Gayle scored 23 goals in 32 appearances when Newcastle won the Championship in 2016-17. "Dwight is a proven goalscorer in the Championship".
