A staple of PGA Championship events are steep greens and Bellerive is no exception. He understood that Spieth, who turned pro a year earlier and effectively had a two-year start on him, has more majors, has won more tournaments, reached No. 1 first and stayed there longer. He also won the Players Championship.

August 8, 2018; St. Louis, MO, USA; Justin Rose addresses the media in a press conference during the Wednesday practice round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Bellerive Country Club. America was under attack.

The PGA Championship will be Woods' 14th tournament, the most he has played in any year since 2013.

"I didn't ask for it", Jim Furyk said of his 8:17 a.m. ET first-round tee time at Bellerive with Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele, now 11th and 13th respectively on the Ryder Cup points list. Coming to this course, however, makes him reflect on that fateful day back in 2001.

Woods, eight months into a comeback from spinal fusion surgery, and McIlroy, seeking his first major win since the 2014 PGA, will be joined by defending champion Justin Thomas for the first two days over the 7,316-yard, par-70 Bellerive Country Club layout.

"You go through spells where you don't quite get over the line, but he's still contending every week, and I admire his patience and the way he goes about it", Bjorn said. "We want those types of players on the team".

"It's hard to remember a course I've played that has so many doglegs left", he said.

The Ryder Cup, scheduled to begin on September 28, was also postponed until the next year.

"Well, it's not easy to win major championships", Woods said.

"One of the towers had fallen on the American Express building, and a lot of people lost their lives".

"Right now it doesn't really favor anyone because it's playing so soft, " Woods said.

"You have to make the most of everything, you have to see the positives and just move on and forget about it and that's what I've tried to do this year". He's a four-time PGA Championship victor, with the last in 2007. He missed the last event held here, the BMW Championship in 2008, because of a leg injury.

Woods will be in Paris one way or another. "One of the main challenges we have is to ensure that golf is front and center, while the technology remains a complementary part of the puzzle. I kind of lost a little bit of my own freedom, thoughts on who I am as a person and as a golfer". Although Woods rarely discusses what he goes through to get ready, you can bet there is a lengthy regiment he endures before he comes close to stepping onto a driving range. "It'll be fun. I enjoy playing with Tiger, but once we get out there, it will be business".

"You know what's fascinating?" said another Cardinals World Series shortstop, Ozzie Smith.

The whipping thwack of a golf ball leads to necks whipping toward the sky and then back down, synchronized spectators.

There have been high spots - the first-round lead at the Masters and a blistering 64 to finish third in April - and disappointments, such as a closing 76 to squander a share of the 54-hole lead at this year's Open.

"That one drive changed our entire directive with my foundation", Woods said.

"We'll be looking to try to break that, " Furyk said.

ST. LOUIS - A key figure on so many European Ryder Cup teams, Sergio Garcia finds himself well outside of an automatic qualifying place for the 2018 squad and the subject of surprising debate about whether captain Thomas Bjorn should make him an at-large pick.
