Serena Williams downplays controversy over French Open 'catsuit' ban

The 23-time Grand Slam champion experienced life-threatening complications after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr and said the catsuit was more than just a fashion statement. My whole team is basically French, so, yeah, we have a wonderful relationship. "One must respect the game and the place" in an interview with Tennis Magazine. She said at the competition the outfit made her feel "like a warrior princess" and that it allowed her "an opportunity to inspire a whole different group of fantastic women and kids".

The black bodysuit tennis pro Serena Williams wore at this year's French Open is causing quite a frenzy.

However, French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli is of a different opinion after singling out Williams' outfit as an example of the kind of dress-code the federation will no longer accept. Williams, who topped Forbes' list of highest paid female athletes earlier this week, said in May she believed the outfit sent a message of strength to women around the world. "That's been really surprising for me".

The final Grand Slam event of the year begins Monday.
