Joe Thomas sounds off against Jon Gruden and Raiders/Khalil Mack trade

Derek Carr didn't expect Khalil Mack to be traded, but the quarterback says the Oakland Raiders are over the shock of this past weekend's move.

"It isn't what anybody wanted - I think that's clear", Carr said Monday, two days after the Raiders packaged Mack, who had been holding out all offseason, a second-round draft pick in 2020 and a 2020 conditional fifth-rounder to Chicago for the Bears' first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-rounder in 2019 and a third-rounder in 2020. It's one of those things that happen. Giving up multiple first-round picks to land a player of Mack's caliber certainly got people talking, but the majority of folks agree: This was a move that will have an enormous impact on many teams, not just the Bears. Eclipsing Donald's contract, Mack inked a six-year, $141 million contract with $90 million guaranteed.

Jon Gruden is back in the National Football League, baby, and he's off to some kind of start.

"I don't believe we were anywhere close to where the Bears were".

The Raiders, meanwhile, had given extensions to Carr, right guard Gabe Jackson (five years, $56 million) and defensive tackle Justin "Jelly" Ellis (three years, $15 million) in the past year. "Jon had a particular set of skills that he did really well, and foremost among them was analyzing the play, breaking down the play, 'Here's why they ran that play, here's why it worked, here's what this guy did or didn't do.' It was really football-heavy, X-and-O-heavy, and I think most play-by-play guys, all play-by-play guys, would've felt like a bit of a bystander".

"We're just dying for a victor", Phillips said. "Honestly, it hurts because we did, we tried, and we were always open". We got a lot better. "We've got free agents on our team that are going to be [up] next year; we've got to find a way to bring them back". Whereas now, I've got a job to do.

Still, Carr said he was initially anxious about the effect of Mack being traded on the Raiders' locker room.

"I obviously know who he is as a player from playing against him for the past four years in the same division", Nagy said.

All the added time that McCarthy has to spend getting ready for Mack is less time that he'll have to game plan against the rest of the Bears' defense.

"They're trying to divide us", Gruden said, via ESPN while addressing reports that he and McKenzie had differing opinions on whether or not they should keep Mack. "Collectively, it's everybody. It's an exciting situation for us as a team, as a city, as an organization".
