In addition, Deadline Hollywood found that the 2018 Sunday game was down over the numbers from 2016's Week 1, as well. That number represented another eight percent drop from the same week's game during the 2017 season. Overall, NFL ratings were down almost 10 percent across all game times last year compared to the year before. League commissioner Roger Goodell was likely hoping to get 2018 off to a strong start, and while Sunday night's matchup does represent a 7 percent jump from Thursday's season opener, not to mention it was the most-watched SNF offering in nearly a year, it's still not as high as years past.

The league's television ratings, which once looked unstoppable, have steadily declined in the last few years, although NFL games are still the most popular programming on American television.

The crashing ratings drew the ire of President Donald Trump who slammed the NFL for its continued protests during the national anthem.
