EPL: Pogba wants to stay, insists Mourinho

"We knew that, but they have quality, they have confidence because they won the first four games".

Nemanja Matic has revealed what Jose Mourinho said to the Manchester United players at half-time of Saturday's win over Watford.

De Gea - coveted by Real Madrid until they signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea - gave a non-commital answer when asked about whether he will pledge his long-term future to United who have opened talks over a new contract. "We gave them the chance to be reborn, score a goal and give us a hard match".

Pogba, 25, has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford - with LaLiga giants Barcelona reportedly interested - after just two full seasons with United following his move from Juventus.

"By experience, when a team reaches the quarterfinals then even the teams that are not favourites, when you arrive in the quarterfinals you smell the distance is not very far and every team starts thinking about it, but is too early now", he said.

"At this moment, I am in the dark".

"But Marouane is giving us more than that - he's giving us that but he's also giving us quality and simplicity".

Compare him to midfielder Paul Pogba, and the difference in their comments is very notable.

"It is disappointing but there are positives we can take away from our reaction and it is important how we react to this first defeat of the season and next week we have to show what we are about".

United only need to look back to their last European game to see what happens if they give an inch. But it was not to be for the Hornets.

"But six goals and defensive mistakes, and then we go to two matches away - hard matches, different stadiums, Burnley, Watford - and I felt that my central defenders they needed, especially in this moment of a bit of instability, they needed somebody to support and to give them the first wall; physicality". If we have to lose, we have to lose like today, fighting until the end, showing our spirit and character.

"Against Brighton we didn't deserve to win that match, but against Tottenham I think we did deserve to win it".
