A new report by The New York Times reveals that police questioned Brett Kavanaugh about a bar fight in 1985.

In the report, Dudley denied throwing a Collins glass at a patron, identified as Dom Cozzolino. A witness reportedly said that Chris Dudley, a close friend of Kavanaugh's who has come out in support of his nomination, then hit the man in the ear with a glass.

One of Kavanaugh's college friends Chad Ludington, told the New York Times that the fight occurred after attending a UB40 concert.

Reached briefly by phone, Dudley said, "I don't know what [Ludington] is talking about".

Dudley and Cozzolino didn't immediately return messages on Tuesday.

On Monday, the White House released joint statements from Dudley and a former Yale suitemate Dan Murphy refuting any claims that Kavanaugh drank to the point of blacking out.

"It is truth that is at stake, and I believe that the ability to speak the truth, even when it does not reflect well upon oneself, is a paramount quality we seek in our nation's most powerful judges,"he said".

Sams, a lawyer in Atlanta who was a fraternity brother of Kavanaugh and Dudley, said he does not remember seeing Kavanaugh there. "I never saw him be sexually aggressive but he definitely was sloppy drunk", Swisher added.

What Mr Trump was clear about, however, was that while Judge Kavanaugh may have had "difficulty as a young man" with alcohol, that alone shouldn't disqualify him from the high court.

Mr Judge's interview started but "has not been completed", his attorney said in a statement quoted by Fox News.

The FBI has reopened a background check on the Supreme Court nominee, but the probe is narrowly focused, top officials said in interviews on Sunday.

She alleges that Mr Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party in the early 1980s when they were both students at Yale.

Two other people who Ford said attended the same party have also been interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The police report does not indicate whether anyone was arrested, and New Haven's police chief, Anthony Campbell, told CNN there are no other records he is aware of involving Kavanaugh. He accused Democrats of politicising the process and harming his family and good name.

Kavanaugh has denied the charge, which first appeared in a New Yorker article last month. "Are we really going to tell Brett Kavanaugh not to become a Supreme Court Justice over an ice incident in 1985, not 30 years in criminal justice".

Kavanaugh repeatedly admitted drinking beer during his committee testimony, pushing back against some members' questions about just how much he drank.
