Del Potro into China Open final after Fognini withdraws

Juan Martin del Potro suffered a shock defeat in the China Open final today.

But, on Sunday, the Georgian captured his second ATP World Tour 500 title of the season, upsetting top seed Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-4 at the China Open.

This trophy was second in career Basilashvili.

But Basilashvili clearly hadn't read the script when he broke del Potro's serve in just the third game.

World number four Del Potro had earlier advanced to the final after his semi-final opponent Fabio Fognini pulled out of the contest in Beijing because of ankle pain.

Despite missing out on a third title of the year, Del Potro can be satisfied with his performance in Beijing, as the 30-year-old qualified for next month's season-ending ATP Finals in London, joining Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

"My game today wasn't as good as it was in the last matches in the tournament", Del Potro said.

Del Potro is set to play the final against the victor of the match between British Kyle Edmund and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Matters came to a head in a pulsating eighth game, when del Potro failed to convert three break points that would likely have shifted momentum the Argentinian's way.

"It's going to be a hard one", Del Potro, who has a 1-1 win-loss record against Fognini, added.
