News agency Anadolu later reported that a private plane that had arrived from Saudi Arabia at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport was searched last Tuesday, the day Khashoggi was last seen.

The Turkish ministry of foreign affairs had stated that Saudi Arabia has provided all assistance and cooperation in the case of the missing journalist who has disappeared in Istanbul last week.

Jamal Khashoggi went to the consulate last Tuesday to obtain a document certifying he had divorced his ex-wife, so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday called for a thorough and open probe by Washington's ally Saudi Arabia into the disappearance of Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi, after US President Donald Trump voiced concern for the journalist.

"We have seen conflicting reports on the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo said in an October 8 statement.

That hope diminished over the weekend, when several news outlets reported the possibility that Khashoggi had been killed and dismembered at the consulate so that his body could be smuggled out of the building without detection.

Another senior Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss diplomatic strategy, said Ankara hoped that Washington and the worldwide community would take the lead in challenging Saudi Arabia over the fate of Khashoggi, a legal resident of the United States and a columnist for The Washington Post.

While a military conflict is not likely to arise between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, this new development will place more strain on the relationship, further complicating the already hard situation in the Middle East.

"You know they have been under fire from the Iranian-aligned Houthis". Rumors from within the Turkish government have portrayed these individuals as a squad dispatched from Saudi Arabia to abduct or murder Khashoggi. Why don't you prove it?

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday called on Saudi Arabia to investigate the odd disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, whose case has sparked worldwide outcry over the extent of the kingdom's crackdown on dissent.

Cengiz urged Saudi Arabia, "especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate".

They checked into the Mövenpick, one of the people with knowledge of the investigation said. (Trump) I have not.

Turkish authorities have claimed they have surveillance camera video of Khashoggi entering the consulate but never leaving. Salman said Turkish officials were welcome to search the building, insisting, "We have nothing to hide".

Erdogan said "mere words [of Saudi officials] are not enough evidence".

Khashoggi has been an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, causing him to leave his home country past year to live in exile in the United States. 'I don't like hearing about it and hopefully that will sort itself out.

What are Turkey and Saudi Arabia saying?

"Right now, nobody knows anything about it, but there are some pretty bad stories going around".

The UN's human rights office has said it would be "truly shocking" if the grisly reports coming from Turkish officials are confirmed.
