Plane carrying Melania Trump turns around after 'burning' smell reported on board

Melania Trump will make an appearance in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

A CNN reporter aboard the flight says Secret Service handed the press corps wet towels to put over their faces to deal with the smell of smoke.

"A FLOTUS staffer came into our compartment and informed us that there was a "mechanical problem" and we would be returning to Joint Base Andrews and would re-evaluate on the tarmac". A source described it as a "minor technical issue" and that the first lady was "fine".

"Smell and smoke have since dissipated".

The aircraft was leaving from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland bound for Philadelphia on Wednesday morning (local time) when a thin haze of smoke was visible in the cabin, U.S. media reports.

Other details about the incident were not provided.

Mrs Trump had been due to visit Philly's Jefferson Hospital to meet babies born addicted to opioids.

"As the caretakers of the next generation, it is our responsibility to protect our most valuable and vulnerable, our children", said Trump in her prepared remarks.

"I hope this plane's better than the first one", Trump joked.

"We need to educate the children of social-emotional behavior, so when they grow up, they know how to deal with those issues", Trump said.

"It's harder to govern", the first lady said of untrustworthy people.
