"As a result, Arab governments have been given free rein to continue silencing the media at an increasing rate", Khashoggi wrote.

Prior to his visit to Ankara, Pompeo went to Saudi Arabia, where he held talks with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the disappearance of Khashoggi. Middle East Eye's source reported that it took seven minutes before he died.

Pompeo said earlier on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia has strongly denied any knowledge of the disappearance of Khashoggi as U.S. President Donald Trump refused to condemn the country before any facts emerge.

Turkish forensic officials arrive to the residence of Saudi Arabia's Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi in Istanbul, Turkey October 17, 2018.

Crime-scene technicians wore white coveralls, gloves and shoe covers entering the residence.

Turkish officials have yet to formally disclose any of the evidence they have steadily leaked mainly to the Western media in an apparent effort to corner the Saudis. It described the recording as offering evidence that a Saudi team immediately accosted the 60-year-old journalist after he entered the consulate.

"You don't know whether or not we have, do you?" he asked, before adding, "I'm not going to tell you". "If you want to live when you come to Saudi Arabia, be quiet!" he said.

In Turkey, Pompeo discussed "the importance of a thorough, transparent and timely investigation" into the Khashoggi case.

President Donald Trump says the U.S.is asking Turkey for audio and video relating to missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi "if it exists". Most crucially, the White House needs Saudi Arabia to keep global oil markets steady as they confront Iran and introduce new energy sanctions against countries that purchase Iranian oil starting November 4. The U.S. president wants King Salman and OPEC to boost production to drive down high oil prices, caused in part by the coming re-imposition of oil sanctions on Iran in November.

It urged an investigation by the UN's Security Council or Human Rights Council, noting that "until the full truth about Mr. Khashoggi is disclosed, US businesses should shun the Saudi regime and Congress should block all military sales".

The US and Saudi Arabia have always been allies, with both opposed to Riyadh's regional nemesis Iran since the country's 1979 revolution.

"As for responses that the U.S. will take, we need to know the facts before we can begin to formulate what the appropriate response for this would be", he noted.

But the Crown Prince "pledged that the work of the Saudi public prosecutor will produce a full and complete conclusion with full transparency for the world to see", Pompeo said. "We are working with the Turks to make sure that we get to the right place", he said.

The Saudis have strongly denied those allegations, but United States media outlets have reported they will acknowledge he was killed in a botched interrogation.

Trump has shown no interest in calling out the kingdom over Khashoggi - or calling out Russian President Vladimir Putin on assassinations or North Korea's Kim Jong Un on political prisoners.

The crown prince, touted as a radical reformer for his decision to let women drive and drive to modernize the desert kingdom's oil-dependent economy, is at odds with Turkey over the latter's support for the Muslim Brotherhood and its military alliance with Saudi Arabia's big bugbear, Qatar.
