Space Force will be a reality very soon: Mike Pence

Pence said the 1967 treaty "does ban weapons of mass destruction in space, but it doesn't ban military activity. It will be a consolidation, we believe, and from there, future Congresses and future administrations can grow and expand and nurture. the Space Force as they see fit", Mr Pence added.

"The American side, especially with the arrival of the Trump's administration, has embarked on a course for total domination in outer space, just like in other areas", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in comments quoted by TASS in response to statements of US Vice President Mike Pence, who earlier spoke of US dominance of space.

White House advisers on Tuesday are set to recommend that US President Donald Trump's planned US Space Command develop ways for the military to operate in outer space, according to two administration officials briefed on the plans.

The new positioning comes as the Trump administration moves to potentially exit a major nuclear weapons pact with Russian Federation and possibly bolster USA military operations in the heavens by forming a "Space Force".

The head of the US Air Force said in September that creating a Space Force would cost about US$13 billion (S$18 billion) for a force of 13,000 people in the first five years.

"That will be the project of the space force going forward".

He also said the Trump administration hopes to establish Space Force, a sixth branch of the US military focused on outer space, as soon as 2020.

One piece of the plan includes establishing a new space combatant command to establish a chain of command for the new branch once the next budget and NDAA have been passed by Congress.

The space force proposal has been criticized for stepping up the militarization of space, despite worldwide treaties supposedly designating space as a peaceful domain.

"The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of the armed forces of the United States, to turn the page to an evolution of our armed forces, to meet the challenges and opportunities on that limitless frontier", Pence said.
