Alec Baldwin arrested after fight in New York City

The 30 Rock sitcom star was taken into custody shortly before 2pm local time (6pm GMT) in Manhattan's Greenwich Village.

Officers said the men were arguing and pushed each other before Baldwin turned violent.

Baldwin then followed the man to a nearby parking meter and punched him, according to police.

That history of friction between the two men is why, shortly after Baldwin's arrest, someone asked President Trump for his reaction.

"I wish him luck", the president told reporters. He was take to Lenox Hill Hospital and was listed in stable condition. His publicist did not immediately respond to a message requesting comment.

The outspoken critic of Trump, whose career the Republican president once said was only "saved by his awful impersonation of me on SNL", was briefly arrested on Friday afternoon.

Baldwin also appeared in the Hollywood films Beetlejuice, The Departed and Glengarry Glen Ross. The network said the talk show will air as scheduled Sunday at 10 PM; all the shows for the season have already taped.

After the bicycle-related arrest, Baldwin told NY magazine he was ready to quit his public life and leave the city, an hour train ride from where he grew up on Long Island. In 2011, he was thrown off a plane for refusing to stop playing the game "Words with Friends" before take-off.

Back in 2014, Baldwin was arrested after being stopped by police for riding a bicycle the wrong way down a one-way street.
