In just the first week of early voting, election officials say more than 716,000 ballots were cast.

As of Sunday, more than one million votes have been cast across the state, according to Catawba College Professor Michael Bitzer, who analyzes state politics.

Spokesman Matt Dietrich says this year's numbers are nearly keeping pace with the 2016 election.

Early voting turnout is on track to mirror what we saw during the 2014 midterm elections.

Florida voters are choosing whether their new governor should be Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum or former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis. The race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democrat Kim Schrier has drawn considerable interest, spurring millions in campaign spending.


In Onslow County, turnout is slightly lower, with less than 5% of residents voting early.

"As of last night, we are about 700 (ballots) ahead of where we were in the presidential election two years ago", Kittitas County Auditor Jerry Pettit said Wednesday afternoon. Bill Nelson in a race that could determine control of the U.S. Senate.

While engagement appears fairly high so far, voters who have yet to return their ballots shouldn't get complacent.
