In an interview in 2007 with US TV station WTMJ Vernita said Winfrey always had something special.

"The family of Vernita Lee are saddened to share of her passing on November 22, 2018, at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin".

Her son, Jeffrey Lee, died in 1989 and her other daughter, Patricia Lee Lloyd, died in 2003. "Memorial donations in Vernita's name may be made to Feeding America", her obituary reads. News, Oprah was not with her mother at the time of her death, spending Thanksgiving with girls from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, the South African boarding school she founded in 2002.

Vernita Lee, mother of media mogul Oprah Winfrey, died at 83, multiple media outlets reported. The wonder and spectacularity of such a belief are what carried her through life, especially during the time when she moved from her grandmother to her mother's care as a child. She was raped and abused by family friends, who have not been publicly identified, while in Milwaukee.


Winfrey recalled a favorite story about her mother during a 2003 visit to the city of Pewaukee.

Lee was born in 1935 in MS and gave birth to Oprah in 1954. Lee passed on Thanksgiving day, leaving behind two daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She named her Orpah, but because of mispronunciations, she later became known as Oprah.

Oprah Winfrey's mother has died.

Patricia Lee was put up for adoption when Winfrey was 8 and living with her father. Lee later moved to Milwaukee and Oprah, then 6, moved to live with her mother.
