Meanwhile, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert urged European states to do more to support Ukraine and said Washington wants to see tougher enforcement of sanctions against Russian Federation.

"I have asked the Secretary General of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to increase the presence of the member-countries in the Black Sea, which includes air and naval presence".

The 10 provinces all border Russia or Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region, where Russian troops are stationed, or have coastlines on the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov close to Crimea.


The comments were Trump's strongest to date in condemnation of Russia's recent actions in Ukraine, where tensions are flaring.

"Perhaps we can break through in Buenos Aires or not", he said. "The Ukrainian people have been engaged in this war since 2014 and the Crimean peninsula is still under occupation". It has been Russian challenge to the whole world.

He said: "I think it reflects Washington's tendency to indulge any and all action taken by the Kiev regime, even inciting them to provocative actions".
