South Africa's police minister defended officers on Monday after revellers at a weekend concert dedicated to Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg headlined by Beyonce endured chaos and robberies following the event.

At the core of the festival, the Global Citizen Festival, which was devoted to the activities of South African leader Nelson Mandela, was laid charitable objective.

Thousands of music fans, many of whom had been given free tickets in return for activism and campaigning work, began to flock to the stadium hours before the gig was due to kick off.

It was launched by the Motsepe Foundation to not only celebrate the centenary year of former president Nelson Mandela but also honour his legacy in the fight to end "extreme poverty".

All the while, Namhla said, South African Police Service (SAPS) was nowhere to be found. "We do not go by what is posted on social media because the only time something is factual is if we get an affidavit", Naidoo said. "We as stadium management were not involved in the safety and security of the event as we would normally have been as we did with the Guns N' Roses concert last week Thursday", Grobbelaar said.

Mandela was imprisoned for almost three decades for his fight against the apartheid regime.

Only one incident has been reported to police after concertgoers were robbed and assaulted near the FNB stadium.

Police arrested one suspect in the theft of a cell phone, police Brig.

Perhaps it's part of the ANC election campaign trail or honest words coming from President Cyril Ramaphosa but his message to the youth and upholding Madiba's values resonated with the youth crowds at the FNB stadium.

In 2013, thieves stole cash takings at the stadium after a Justin Bieber concert.
