Thousands paid tribute to George H.W. Bush as his casket lay in repose in Houston, and a funeral service will be held for the former president Thursday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church. He opened by observing that in life, "the idea is to die young as late as possible", remembering his father's adventurous spirit.

The body of Mr Bush, which had been lying in state at the US Capitol, was moved to the National Cathedral for the funeral.

"When the history books are written, they will say that George HW Bush was a great president of the United States". But his greetings stopped there, as he failed to acknowledge Hillary Clinton, his defeated Democratic rival in 2016.

A former Bush associate told Politico that the service "will be about the celebration of the noble public service that George H.W. Bush gave".

"But if we respect the human being, I think it's a much broader framework for civility and good will in the country".

Brian Mulroney, Progressive Conservative prime minister from 1984 to 1993, said that Bush asked him to speak about three years ago.

Trump declared Wednesday a national day of mourning in the USA, part of a week-long series of commemorations that began Monday with a solemn public visitation in the Capitol rotunda. Then-Vice President Bush was a big fan of the group, and through the years they became friends.

"But in his final wishes, the late former president put the dignity of the office and, by extension, the nation's dignity, above all, knowing that the passing of a president is a rare occasion and, even in passing, any chance to demonstrate honor and decorum would provide a welcome contrast to this divided political moment", he observed.

Bill Clinton and Mrs. Obama smiled and chatted as music played. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.

Fred Curry, one of the few African-Americans in line, is a registered Democrat from Hyattsville, Maryland, who voted for Bush in 1988, the election won by the one-term president. Meacham says when Bush realized his mistake he said, "Never know".

Mulroney, too, struggled at one point to contain himself as he recounted Bush, a former navy pilot, showing him a plaque mounted at the family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.

"I said, "Dad, I love you and you've been a wonderful father, '" Bush recalled as he delivered his eulogy Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral".
