In a post on Twitter on Thursday, Gordon said he was going to focus on his mental health.

Gordon announced suddenly on Thursday he was stepping away from the Patriots to focus on his mental health. [Robert] Kraft, as well as countless others within the Patriots organization for their continued support.

Without him in the lineup, the Patriots will be forced to rely on less-than-stellar pass catchers like Chris Hogan, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Phillip Dorsett (who has barely seen the field since Gordon joined the team). He is reportedly facing an indefinite suspension for violating terms of his reinstatement under the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Josh Gordon, a wide receiver for the New England Patriots, is "stepping away" from the National Football League for the sake of his mental health, he announced on Twitter on Thursday. Any sort of violation of National Football League substance abuse policy could lead to a lifetime ban.

Josh Gordon is taking a break from the game of football. He rejoined the team three weeks later and played in one game for Cleveland before the Browns chose to move on, trading him to New England for a 2019 fifth-round pick.

During Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Gordon was held to one catch for 19 yards and was targeted just twice.

The Patriots have relied mightily on Gordon, Julian Edelman, and James White to make big plays, but they must spread the ball around more now.

Gordon missed all of 2015 and 2016 due to violations of the substance-abuse policy.

Gordon had an All-Pro season in 2013, with 87 receptions for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.

"He's a smart kid, so he learns well", Belichick said. Tom Brady had also been full of praise for his work ethic since coming to New England. Most everything we've asked him to do he's done somewhere along the line for somebody.
