US News and World Report ranked the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet as the best overall diets for 2018, and this mostly plant-based diet has been proven to help you lose weight, live longer, reduce risk of heart disease, and boost brain health. In the latest rankings, the Mediterranean diet also took the titles of best diet for healthy eating, diabetes and heart health, the easiest diet to follow and the best plant-based diet.

For its rankings, U.S. News and World Report evaluated 41 different diets on factors like weight loss and diet's effectiveness against diseases.

Unlike highly restrictive diets like the keto diet or the Atkins diet, the Mediterranean diet is balanced and allows people to eat a wide variety of foods in moderation. The most successful diet is one that you can stick to.

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was created to help manage blood pressure, but experts say it has many overall health benefits, helping it nab the number 2 spot on the best overall diets list.


The eating plan features a wide variety of options, including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, poultry, and fish. It also limits red meat, salt, and candies. Thanks to science, times have certainly changed since your parents tried these old-school (though often misguided) diet tips.

The Mediterranean diet puts an emphasis on living an active lifestyle first and foremost.

Developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, the DASH diet focuses on reducing high blood pressure with low-sodium foods, which include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean proteins.

Weight Watchers ranked in the top five for best diets overall and also obtained the No. 1 rankings for Best Commercial Diet and Best Weight Loss Diet for 2019. The plan also involves in-person meetings or online chats created to support those in the program and keep them accountable.
