Unseeded Estonian Kanepi knocked Halep out of the first round at Flushing Meadows previous year, making the Romanian the first top seed to lose at that tournament's earliest stage.

A highlight first-round clash will see Australia's unseeded Nick Kyrgios up against Canada's big-serving 16th seed Milos Raonic, with the victor facing either Stan Wawrinka or Ernests Gulbis. Stan Wawrinka, the 2014 AO victor, looms as a second-round foe for Kyrgios.

A hard first-round draw for Murray sees the world No 230 face 22nd seed Bautista Agut, though the five-time Australian Open finalist will be buoyed by his 100 per cent record against the Spaniard.

No. 4 Alexander Zverev is in the same half and looms in the semifinals if both players advance that far.

Aiming for a 21st Grand Slam trophy and a 100th career singles title, Federer will open against Denis Istomin.


"I'm so close, I'll give it a go, " Federer said. If it would happen defending this title, I would gladly accept it.

The two had to leave the court to allow for the next practice session.

Williams will face Tatjana Maria in the first round, and could meet either Genie Bouchard or Peng Shaui in the second.

Djokovic, who like Federer is bidding for a record seventh title in Melbourne, will play a qualifier in round one. Halep has drawn another first-round against Kaia Kanepi, who beat her at the same stage at last year's U.S. Open, and a possible third rounder against unseeded Venus Williams. For me it's just taking it day by day, doing the right things, taking even better care of my body.

The Serb had a magnificent 2018, making an astonishing climb back from outside the world's top 20 in June, winning Wimbledon and the US Open on the way to reclaiming the No 1 ranking in November.

Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka was also among the most notable unseeded players to be placed in the top half of the draw as well, as she will face Laura Siegemund first up as a potenial third-round foe for Osaka.
