Woods hit a delicate pitch to 5 feet for birdie on No. 10, hit 3-wood to 10 feet for eagle on the par-5 11th, holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 12th and a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th.

Justin Thomas eagled the first hole and took the sole lead early in the third round at the Genesis Open in Los Angeles on Saturday as Tiger Woods made a charge at a tournament he has never won. It was as much fun as I've had watching golf in 2019.

"I know that one [under par] is in, so I'm playing the weekend, and I get two more rounds to kind of get after it", Woods said with the confidence of a 14-time major champion. Woods ended his second round early on Saturday morning with a birdie at the ninth hole from off the green to guarantee himself a made cut at Riviera, and that was apparently the opening he needed for the afternoon session.

American Thomas was one stroke ahead of Australian Adam Scott after two holes when play was suspended in fading light at the rain-hit tournament at Riviera, where a seven-hour delay on Thursday put things way behind schedule.

"I'm going to need to be patient because I'm playing so many holes", he said, "stay in it emotionally and stay patient, see what we can do".

Thomas was 13 under par, while Scott was alone at 12 under.

"I'm trying to get over that 6.45 start". I've got to get up and down at 17.

But the 43-year-old has admitted he is struggling at the Genesis Open with his body. Hopefully I can find it in here in the last couple rounds. At both tournaments he has played this year, the 80-time PGA Tour victor has lamented his poor putting, although for different reasons.

At Torrey Pines three weeks ago, where a final-round 67 helped him finish in a tie for 20th, Woods said he wasn't reading putts well.

Then a precision approach inside 10-feet on the par-5 1st set up his second eagle of the round, meaning Woods sat 7 under through 10 holes and eyeing off the course record of 61.

"I am not seeing the [putting] line".

'Consequently, I'm having a hard time starting my ball on line because I have a hard time seeing it.

That was in sharp contrast to his second round, which was marred by four 3-putts.

The pair started the round tied, before Thomas nearly holed out for albatross at the par-five first. Along with one year when the tournament went to Valencia Country Club, Woods has played this event the most of any in his career without a victory.
