UK Security Heads Say They Can Handle Potential Huawei 5G Threat

Despite this relatively unclear conclusion for what defending against Chinese espionage via Huawei technology could mean in practice, the NCSC recommended the United Kingdom government allow United Kingdom telecoms to use Huawei technology.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) sees ways of limiting risks from using Huawei in future 5G networks, according to two unnamed sources cited by the FT.

"I would be obliged to report if there was evidence of malevolence.by Huawei".

In Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China expects Britain "to maintain its open nature and make wise choices based on its own interests". The UK government could still decide to ban Huawei's technology from its networks after the full review is complete.

Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. have barred Huawei from involvement in building fifth-generation telecoms infrastructure out of concerns its technology could be used by Beijing for spying or mounting cyber attacks.

Some UK telecoms, such as Vodafone, EE and Three, have been complaining about the cost of switching from Huawei gear, as the companies have already started deploying some 5G equipment purchased from Huawei or don't want to throw away the old Huawei gear they've been using.

Huawei, which is the world's second-largest smartphone maker, has also recently had a senior executive arrested in Canada on accusations of busting USA sanctions on Iran.
