Red Wings Trade Nick Jensen To Capitals For Draft Pick, Defenseman

In return, the Wings receive defenseman Madison Bowey and a second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Detroit's patience paid off, with the NHL Network's Brian Lawton tweeting earlier this week that the Wings were holding firm on their desire to obtain, at minimum, a second-round pick for Jensen. The Red Wings also sent the Capitals a fifth-round pick. He can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

With many (most) teams around the National Hockey League in need, and not enough right-handed blue-liners to go around, one of the most coveted was plucked off the market on Friday.

Jensen has two goals and 15 points, the latter tying a career high, and a plus-one rating in 60 games this season. He has played in 190 National Hockey League games with Detroit, logging 43 career points and 56 penalty minutes. He told reporters on Thursday he was hoping to stay with Detroit past Monday's trade deadline.

And when Holland got the second-round pick he was seeking, plus a young blue-liner with National Hockey League experience, he pulled the trigger.

Bowey, meanwhile, is just 23 years old and has found himself in and out of Washington's lineup this season. He is signed through next season at a salary-cap hit of $1 million. Additionally, Jensen was on the ice for 42 goals at five-on-five, the second most on the Red Wings this season.
