A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was run over before he was shot, though investigators were still looking into whether the gunman mowed the mobster down, sources said.

"Upon arrival, officers found a 53-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso", the police said in a statement sent to NPR. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, an NYPD official told HuffPost. News accounts since 2015 said he had ascended to the top spot.

In 2015, Cali, who was known as "Franky Boy", became the acting boss of the Gambino family-one of New York City's "Five Families"-replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu".

This is a breaking story. Gotti took over the crime organization; he died of cancer, in prison, in 2002. He was shot in the chest at least six times on a tree-lined street in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from ball fields, a country club and a day camp.

The Gambino family had previously gained a high profile under the leadership of the late John Gotti - who orchestrated the last public killing of a Gambino crime boss in 1985, when Paul Castellano was gunned down outside of Sparks Steak House in Manhattan.

"Frank Cali was a pretty likeable guy, and also this is not a way the mob would kill one of their own", he said. This week, prosecutors in Brooklyn announced a case against a longtime Gambino associate accused of killing a suspected loan shark affiliated with the Lucchese crime family.

The Gambino Family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the US, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach. The 85-year-old was serving a 100-year federal prison sentence after his conviction on racketeering and murder charges in the famous mid-'80s "Commission trial".

Castellano was killed on Gotti's orders, in what was seen to be a major break from Mafia protocol, which forbade the unsanctioned murder of a family head. He died at the Duke University Medical Center last Thursday.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola of the Bonanno family was shot dead while waiting in his vehicle for an order from a Bronx McDonald's.

Cali, who was born in Sicily, Italy, reportedly had strong ties to an Italian crime family.
