Beto Announces 2020 Run

Beto O'Rourke launched a run on Thursday for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, hoping his message and the fame gained from his unsuccessful election challenge against U.S. Senator Ted Cruz in Texas past year set him apart from a diverse field.

The addition of O'Rourke makes a crowded Democratic field even more crowded, and it will be fascinating to see if he can find a constituency, and where it will come from. But he has not clearly defined himself in terms of what he actually believes or where his ideology will fit among a group of candidates who range from progressive to more moderate.

Here's the announcement video featuring the former Texas congressman and his wife, Amy Hoover Sanders.

His decision jolts an early election season already stuffed with contenders, adding to the mix a relentless campaigner with a small-dollar fund-raising army, the performative instincts of a former punk rocker and a pro-immigrant vision to counteract President Trump's.

Beto O'Rourke doesn't seem to have any policy positions on his campaign website yet - but he does have lots of merchandise for sale.

Some had encouraged O'Rourke to make another run at the Senate again, challenging Republican Sen.

President Donald Trump is welcoming Beto O'Rourke to the Democratic primary race with faint praise.

He took a well-publicized road trip across the American Southwest, stopping at colleges and diners.

It wasn't the first time O'Rourke generated national attention for taking on Trump.

"I had to be moving, I had to be meeting people", O'Rourke told Oprah Winfrey in a February interview.

His track record during six years in the US House of Representatives is thin. "So if I were to run, I think it's just so important that those who would comprise my team looked like this country".

O'Rourke went through a list of Democratic priorities, including health care, climate change, family separation and criminal justice reform, gesturing or chopping with his hands to emphasize each point.
