Miami Dolphins trade Ryan Tannehill to Tennessee Titans

The Dolphins will have a new starting quarterback in 2020. While he never established himself as a great starter, Tannehill should be an excellent backup quarterback for Marcus Mariota.

The Miami Dolphins have traded quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans, Tannehill's agency Sports Trust Advisors announced Friday.

The Ryan Tannehill era is over in Miami.

As part of the deal, Tannehill's salary will be cut from the $18.725 million he was scheduled to make in 2019 to $7 million in guaranteed money with up to $5 million more in incentives, according to NFL Network.

The Titans will send a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a 2019 seventh-round selection to the Dolphins, who will also ship a 2019 sixth-round pick to Tennessee. Titans general manager Jon Robinson got creative in a trade to find the best option to fill the role.

Tannehill was drafted by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2012 draft. Tannehill has missed 25 games over his last three seasons due to a variety of injuries including a right shoulder capsule injury that cost him five games in 2018.

The first game that comes to mind was the 2016 rout of the Houston Texans in Dan Campbell's first home game as Dolphins interim head coach.

For the Titans, this is a high-end move but a smart one. He's also battled injuries for nearly all of his career, and the Titans have struggled when Mariota has missed time. Tannehill earned a flawless 158.3 passer rating and was rewarded by being named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
