Patriots' Malcom Brown signs with the Saints

Brown is expected to replace Tyeler Davison as the new starting defensive tackle for New Orleans.

The New Orleans Saints are adding a big name at defensive tackle, signing New England Patriots free agent Malcom Brown. The agreement is pending a physical.

Terms were not disclosed, but NFL Network reported the deal is worth $15 million.

The 25-year-old Brown was a first-round pick out of Texas in 2015.

In his four seasons in New England, Brown appeared in 60 regular-season games (51 starts). He made 186 tackles and 8.5 sacks, peaking at 50 tackles in 2016 and three sacks in 2015 and 2016.

In fairness to Brown, he also had pretty Herculean shoes to fill when he arrived with the team: Vince Wilfork had just departed for the Houston Texans one month before Brown arrived, signaling a true changing of the guard at the nose tackle position.

Current Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata was issued a misdemeanor summons for marijuana possession last month, and could face discipline from the league, possibly a multi-game suspension to begin the 2019 season. Brown was still a big piece of the defensive line, playing 44 percent of the defensive snaps, mostly as a space eater on first and second downs.
