Chicago Police running internal probe of leaks in Jussie Smollett investigation

There is no doubt that tips and teasers were being dribbled out to the media constantly and speculation running rapid at times, as detectives started looking closer at what had initially be called a "potential hate crime".

Smollett had claimed that, as he was walking home from a Subway, the popular chain located at E. Lower North Water Street in Chicago, two people yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, and proceeded to beat him up.

Smollett has denied that any involvement in orchestrating an attack.

Officials said last month they launched the internal investigation "during the interrogation of the brothers when information leaked out", said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the police department.

Earlier today, the hospital where Jussie Smollett checked himself into after his alleged attack fired dozens of staff for unauthorized access to the actor's medical records.

An employee in another department came to her desk and asked if Smollett been admitted under an alias, the worker said, adding that she didn't ask why the information was needed because she believed it to be a professional request.

Smollett was arrested on February 21 after being charged with felony disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report in which he claimed he was the victim of a hate crime. The actor-singer was hospitalized with cuts and bruises after he said the men poured a bleach-like substance on him and put a noose around his neck.

The Superintendent has batted away Smollett's claim that a $3,500 check for the brothers he allegedly paid to attack him was for personal training and said there was surveillance footage, physical evidence and testimony that proves it was a hoax that is yet to be presented. The actor was released after posting 10 percent of his $100,000 bond.

Following police accusations that Smollett had lied, he was charged with filing a false police report.

The Chicago PD's faced tons of criticism for the way they've handled the Jussie Smollett case especially due to the amount of information that was being spread from police sources.
