In late March, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" was removed from consideration for Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, causing an online uproar over whether or not the song is "country", and if race played a factor in Billboard's decision.

Earlier this week Lil Nas X addressed the removal, which had sparked a debate over the visibility of people of color in the country music genre.

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" has been a subject of controversy, in and out of the country music world, for whether it merits being officially included in that genre. That is, until Billboard chose to remove it from the Hot Country Songs chart.

I didn't wake up this morning thinking I'd listen to a song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, but here we are. Why?

However, as more and more country artists have begun to experiment with genre crossover and stylistic experimentation, it has become more hard to define what, exactly, the sonic elements of a country song are.

The song is now rocketing up the charts - whether Billboard wants it or not. "The song is country trap".

The song rose to prominence after it went viral on the lip-synching app TikTok. Lil Nas X, the artist who previously became popular on Twitter from running a Nicki Minaj fan account, got support from Country veteran Billy Ray Cyrus.

"Country music fans decide what they like".

Now, with the addition of Billy Ray Cyrus, the story has taken a delightful turn. "For example, when rap started, or when rock and roll began. Good for Lil Nas X. He got a country hit".
