Boston has dropped three straight and is 2-8 overall, a lousy start to its World Series championship defence.

A ideal throw from the reigning American League MVP Mookie Betts to gun down Eduardo Escobar at home plate following a single from Nick Ahmed extended the game. Right fielder Mookie Betts threw out Escobar at home on Ahmed's hit, but Kelly's rip to left allowed Ahmed to score easily.

Kelly's hit was a fitting ending to a game that showcased the strengths and weaknesses of the D-backs so far. That was Price's first career RBI and his fourth hit in 50 at-bats.

Greg Holland (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Diamondbacks scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Jackie Bradley Jr. drew a leadoff walk against Yoshihisa Hirano and went to third on J.D. Martinez's pinch-hit single. Andrew Benintendi drew a walk, and Betts drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.

Price gave up four runs over six innings of work. Rick Porcello gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Red Sox, and he was not happy about it.

The Red Sox plated the game's first three runs in the top of the second. Bogaerts led off with a walk and took third with heads-up baserunning on a shallow single to center by Rafael Devers. Eduardo Nunez's groundout scored Bogaerts, and one out later, Devers came home on Price's single past first base. It was just the pitcher's fourth hit in his 12-year Major League Baseball career and his first RBI.

An Andrew Benintendi ground-rule double pushed the Red Sox lead to 3-0, a seemingly daunting deficit against the former Cy Young victor.

"You give up three runs early to this type of team and answer with three in the bottom half of the inning, I think that shows volumes about how tough we are and how prepared we are and our character", D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.
