Gantz concedes; Israeli PM Netanyahu secures 5th term

With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly poised to win reelection by a razor-thin margin after a campaign filled with overt anti-Arab racism, voter suppression tactics, and extremist promises-such as his last-minute vow to annex the West Bank-Palestinian officials decried the election outcome as a vote to "entrench and expand apartheid".

The four main leaders of the centrist party, three of them ex-army chiefs, appeared in a broadcast speech on Israel's three main television channels.

"Together with his current Jewish ultra-Orthodox and nationalist partners, Netanyahu seemed to have a clear path toward building a coalition government that has a majority in the 120-seat parliament", according to AP.

Retired Israeli general Benny Gantz, one of the leaders of the Blue and White (Kahol Lavan) political alliance, speaks before supporters at the alliance headquarters in Tel Aviv, April 10, 2019.

He added that the party will go to the opposition benches to struggle against Netanyahu's policies and to strengthen its power before the next round of elections. "The days are over when the opposition just tried to crawl into the government", he said.

Benny Gantz opened the press conference by asking: "When is the leadership tested?"

Nevertheless, Gantz touted his party's "extraordinary" showing in the election.

"We have founded a true alternative to the rule of Netanyahu", Gantz said.
