The New York City-based publishing company said in a statement its board had concluded a months-long review of its tabloid business, leading to the decision "to explore strategic options" for the USA and United Kingdom editions of its National Enquirer, as well as its Globe and National Examiner publications.

'Because of this focus, we feel the future opportunities with the tabloids can be best exploited by a different ownership.

The tabloid has come under increased scrutiny in recent months after it published private text messages between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, whom Bezos was having an affair with. That probe eventually led to a three-year prison term for Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen for campaign violations among other charges.

An American Media attorney denied that the tabloid committed blackmail, but the attack from Bezos threatened potentially big legal costs and at a bad time for American Media.

With readership down, AMI tried to refinance more than $400 million in debt earlier this year. The Associated Press reported in February that prosecutors were looking into whether the publisher violated terms of the deal, which included a promise not to break any laws in the future. A representative from Chatham declined to comment, and Melchiorre did not respond to a call seeking comment.

The owner of the National Enquirer said on Wednesday it was considering selling the tabloid, which has admitted to paying hush money to help US President Donald Trump get elected and been accused of attempting to blackmail Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

American Media has been expanding in the last two years, buying Us Weekly, Men's Journal, Bauer's US celebrity and teen line, and TEN: Publishing's Adventure Sports Network (ASN).
