At least nine people are reported to have died after a coach went off the road in a hotel district on the holiday island of Madeira.

Most if not all of the dead have been described as Germans.

Around 50 people are thought to have been travelling on the coach.

SIC television said there were 19 ambulances at the scene.

The mayor told the Lusa news agency that multiple people were killed, but the total death toll was not immediately clear.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control at a curve and rolled down an embankment onto a house, according to local newspaper Diario de Noticias de Madeira. "I can not face the suffering of these people", mayor Filipe Sousa told Germany's SIC, adding that all the tourists on the bus were German.

The bus was carrying 55 people when it veered off a road on a bend east of the capital, Funchal, before rolling down a steep hillside on Wednesday, Mr Sousa said.

He said: "I have no words to describe what happened".

The bus slid off the road a around 6:30 pm local time, near the town of Canico in the municipality of Santa Cruz, on the eastern side of the island.
